At the very least they must be able to access rehabilitation if they are drug or alcohol users facing a long sentence. Drug and alcohol problems, no family and the news of a long sentence are high level risk factors for suicide. These factors must be addressed.
The issues became clear again recently at he inquest into the death at Paremoremo of Tony Worrell, which began last week. Several days before his death Worrell had been told of the result of his appeal. He knew he was facing a long sentence.
