In late September 2002, some 457 young people under 20 years of age were in our prisons (24 under 17 years of age). Teenagers (i.e. under 20 years of age) make up 10% of the sentenced prison population and 15% of the remandees.
In 1997, a total of 1253 teenagers were sent to prison (861) or corrective training (392).
