Fact Sheet 6 – Teenagers in prison

Teenagers (i.e. under 20 years of age) make up 10% of the sentenced prison population and 15% of the remandees.

In 1997, a total of 1253 teenagers were sent to prison (861) or corrective training (392).
The Census of Prison Inmates (20 November 1997) showed that of the 491 sentenced
